Release notes for BIND 8.1.2-SGI_fw

These release notes are devided into the following sections:

Where this version of BIND came from

This version of BIND was generated straight from the BIND sources at http://www.isc.org/bind.html.

Had there been any known issues with that distribution at the time of the release of this distribution (and which had known solutions at the same time), changes would have been made, and patches would have been generated and made available at http://www.daveltd.com/bind-irix-port/.

It is reccommended that you check both of those locations, as well as http://freeware.sgi.com/, to look for more current versions of BIND.

How to make use of this version of BIND

The freeware version of BIND installs all of its files into /usr/freeware. As such, this version of BIND will not automatically get used by your system when named gets started.

In order to change that, you will need to replace at least the following commands:

with the versions from /usr/freeware/bin. You will also want to install the file /usr/sbin/ndc, also from /usr/freeware/bin.

The following commands could be run to do this, but please use them with care, as they will remove the old versions of these commands...

	rm -f /usr/sbin/named
	ln -s ../freeware/bin/named /usr/sbin
	rm -f /usr/sbin/named-xfer
	ln -s ../freeware/bin/named-xfer /usr/sbin
	rm -f /usr/sbin/ndc
	ln -s ../freeware/bin/ndc /usr/sbin

If you have been running the named that shipped with IRIX, you will also need to run the named-bootconf.pl script with the appropriate arguments so as to convert your named.boot file into a named.conf file (and then you may want to hand-edit the named.conf to set any appropriate options for your site. See the ISC's BIND documentation for more information.) An example set of command-lines for running named-bootconf.pl would be:

	cd /var/named
	/usr/freeware/bin/named-bootconf.pl < named.boot > named.conf
Which should be adjusted as necessary if your named configuration is set up to run from somewhere other than /var/named.

It should also be noted that /usr/sbin/nslookup is not replaced, and you may want to replace that as well. However, you can get at the new nslookup simply by having /usr/freeware/bin earlier on in your path than /usr/sbin if you prefer. You will also get several other utilities in /usr/freeware/bin, which did not previously ship with IRIX at all:

Other Information

I hope at some point in the future to have a more automatic way of doing the replacements of the standard IRIX distribution, and to include pre-built versions of the utilities in the contrib archive, etc. Due to time constraints, however, I have not been able to include these things in this version of fw_bind.

If you have trouble making use of this distribution, please send mail to bind-irix-freeware@daveltd.com.
